the goal at our studio

Since 2016,  the goal at our studio has been to bring our community an alternative perspective of language and language arts- that they are a part of everybody's everyday life, and they can be beautiful and help us create beauty too.

Learners are coached through a wide range of reading material and taught to tackle different writing tasks, well beyond the scope of school curriculum. We offer online as well as face-to-face group sessions using a fully hybrid learning environment.

English Literacy support is a wonderful help for learners who have diverse needs, including:

Students moving from a Mandarin or Bahasa Malaysia medium (a government school) to an English medium (an International School)

Teacher Alexa has taught students from early childhood to adulthood, including corporate learners. As a senior teacher and curriculum developer at The Language Arts Studio, she brings both experience and empathy to her classes.

With a background in Psychology and Counseling, she’s passionate about supporting students’ mental well-being. Currently completing her Master’s in Counseling at Taylor’s University, she also leads our Winx Club program with warmth and creativity.

Teacher Miriam is a driven educator, researcher, and creative producer completing her PhD in Urban Sociolinguistics at USM. She holds an MA in English Language and Literary Studies from Lancaster University (UK), focusing on Intercultural Communication and Bilingualism.

Passionate about the arts in Malaysia, she has produced sold-out multidisciplinary theatre works. A Hai-O Arts and Culture Grant 2024 recipient, Miriam also develops curriculum at The Language Arts Studio.

She serves as a teacher in several liberal arts subjects as well as in teacher leadership.

Founder & Principal of TLAS, Joanna,  began her career in English Literacy as a teacher before serving as Head of Educational Research and Development at a leading international school in Petaling Jaya.

In 2016, she founded The Language Arts Studio to support students of all backgrounds in mastering English. Holding an M.Ed. from Canada and published in Australia, she values mixed-ability learning and stretching students’ potential. She also serves as a judge for the Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition.

At the Language Arts Studio, we spend half our time reading and half our time writing, with personal consultations each session.

Writing is a powerful tool for expression. Creative writing is approached as a form of art - a Language Art. This is where the studio draws our name.

Sessions Breakdown

  • Fully hybrid session*

  • 4 sessions a month
  • Each sessions is 1.5 hour - split into reading and writing
  • Learners work in groups
  • Groups capped at 8 learners

*All sessions are fully hybrid so learners may choose to attend any of their scheduled sessions in person or online.
